...well in Midgard, at any rate. This was our first foray into the TooFatLardies 'Midgard Heroic Battles' wargame rules, which a number of us have picked up recently.
This battle saw an early Saxon force demolish a gruesome Orc warband pretty convincingly. The Orcs appeared to be numerous, but of fairly poor quality. The Saxon shield wall held firm and was actually able to take the offensive to defeat the hideous fiends. I have to admit, that upon reflection on the points values, the Orcs may have been short one unit, but who's counting anyway!
The rules seemed to flow pretty well and there are a number of fun mechanics which provide for a more narrative style of game. A number of us have armies that can be, or are currently in, conversion for use in Midgard, so I am sure we will see more action in this historical/mythical/fantasy period!
I saw your post on TMP which brought me here. FWIW, I agree with your idea of upping the orc armor. I don't see "the dark side" having such military victories in the writings simply by overwhelming numbers. They seem like a credible fighting force though like any military unit, can break if the situation calls for it..
ReplyDeleteTotally different game - I had an old Apple II program by SSI which had a number of historical armies, plus a few fantasy ones, plus a follow-on program that allowed for army construction. You could set up battles with the canned armies from one side vs the other. So your Greeks vs Persian could be come Greek vs Viking, or Persian vs Carthaginian. One of my favorite match ups was Rome vs Orcs. Superior qualities vs superior numbers. Always a coin toss for the results. The goblins (archers, slingers) were great at getting their licks in on the advancing Romans, break when attacked, flee, and then manage to frequently rally and repeat the process. As a side note, I bought an Apple IIE so I could do my computer work from home via modem rather than wait to get on a console at the computer lab. The salesman pointed out that the Apple IIE had unmatched capability, and the new version on sale had the memory and computational capability upgrade, double over its predecessor.
Yes sir, I'd have more computational capability than I'd ever need...That baby was LOADED with 256K instead 128k.
