Seven Years War, Ancients and Pillage, Twice

Four games at the club on Monday. Ancients using Mortem et Gloriam rules seems to be taking off and there were two games of the Dark Age skirmish game 'Pillage'.

Interestingly there was a sizeable game set in the Seven Years War pitting the Russians against the Prussians. The scale was 20mm, utilising miniatures from a wide rage of 20mm plastics manufacturers. Large 50+ figure battalions gave the game a true 'big battle' feel. The rules used were a set of fast play rules developed by the owner and painter of the collection.  I believe that the Prussians were outflanked by the Russians, despite making headway in the centre, resulting in a Russian victory.

Prussian Guard attack at St. Privat, 1870

In this approximate refight of the Prussian Guard Corp attack on the far right of the French line at the battle of Gravelotte-St. Privat, the French managed to just about hold on for the allocated 8 game turns to secure a victory. That said, the Prussians had penetrated the French line in a number of places and would probably have taken the objective if given another couple of turns.

The casualties inflicted on the Guards by accurate Chassepot fire was horrendous, amounting to approximately half of the infantry bases being destroyed. This mirrors the ruinous one third casualties suffered by the Guard Corp in the actual battle.
