This week's game was an interesting play test of one of the club's member's speed-play Napoleonic rules. Napoleonics is very popular in the club and we do like to get a 'lot of toys' on the table when we get the chance, as most members specialise in one army of the period, or another. Nevertheless, we have never managed to find a set of rules that enable us to adequately finish these large games in a club night (2-2.5 hours).
These rules introduced a number of interesting mechanics to speed up play including a straightforward melee system that includes a roll on a probability table of results, application of a few key modifiers and immediate delivery of combat results. They did seem to capture the grand sweep of mounted combat of the era and were certainly quick. The real test will be with the introduction infantry, artillery and shooting.
